![]() The one benefit to HMs was that they allowed roadblocks to feel natural, and the player can interact with them in an organic way and allows interesting exploration and backtracking. The other roadblocks are HM or key item-related, which are much more natural because they allow the player through when they have a new ability that they have earned. The guy in Pewter is very clear he won't let you through unless you have the Boulder Badge, and the thirsty guards are dumb but you solve their problem directly, turning it into a bit of a puzzle. Red and Blue had a couple of iffy roadblocks, but apart from the guy at the very start that blocks Route 2, they at least open up because of something you do. You would discard your Pokemon first, and then your opponent would discard theirs. Also bad are paths that open up coincidentally, and not because you did something to directly open them, like the blackouts in Lumiose and Sunyshore. Its the opponents turn, so their Roadblock goes into effect first. The Galar league is an organized event at least let it be blocked off by league officials. But there are various others impediments to your leveling that will most likely take weeks to come through, and they vary according to your next desired goal.
